There are some things - strange things - on this Earth that man isn't meant to understand. Words that are deemed unfit to enter society s lexicon, except in the realms of fanaticism, superstition, even downright fiction. And that is why we exist - to keep certain home truths from the human race.

She is one such anomaly. She is apart from society, seemingly unable to form a part of its coherent structure. She says she fits seamlessly into our remit. In a way, she's right. She fits. Not seamlessly, but she fits.

I have my suspicions. She strikes me as a hoax, or someone genuinely misguided at the very kindest. Nevertheless, the powers that be feel she represents too much of an unknown quantity. In that respect, perhaps this is the best place for her. In that respect, we keep her apart from society.

That's problem number one chalked up. But it's been a busy week. Some fool has reported a UFO sighting. It's a CE-III - Close Encounter of the Third Kind, to you and l. Not the old film, but a sighting of alien beings. It's probably bunkum. It's usually bunkum. Just like our latest "anomaly". But it's what we're here for, so we're obliged to investigate.

    We're always obliged to investigate.

about

The Alien Factor has been a long time coming, but it's been worth it. What began as dream has finally become a reality, and I can't honestly say I'm disappointed. This project was born about a decade ago, taking the shape of a goal of one day being a SF television series. It's difficult to say what inspired the decision to create it, but possibly it represented at the time a Doctor Who fan's attempt to do The X-Files "right".

Which is about all the project ever really was for a couple of years. It wasn't until my own writing style and sensibilities began to mature that it was no longer an X-Files clone with a British flavour. What it instead became was a representation of my growing interest in the philosophical exploration of identity. Although the series is laced with
traits from a dozen other inspirations, it has become something unique and individual.

But, it wasn't getting produced any time soon. At which point, BTR Productions steps into the picture. "We're wanting to do a new series for audio," Matthew Kopelke tells me. "Did you want to do that Alien Factor thing you keep talking about?" Sadly, the project had evolved into something a little too visual to adapt faithfully. "How about
adapting the pilot for Beyond Traditional Recognition?" was Matthew's next idea.

You hold in your hands the product of that decision. Although our cast and crew brought to this production new styles and attitudes which had never occurred to me in the years since I first conceived of the characters and story, I am proud of their achievements. It is not the Alien Factor I have grown up with, but that's no bad thing. This version has its own life, its own identity. Which is all I could ever ask for.
